Rose Geranium Organic Essential Oil (Oshadhi) 10ml
Rose Geranium Organic, Pelargonium graveolens
Balancing, sedative and uplifting. Ideal for perfectionists who want to reconnect with themselves.
Rose Geranium has very similar properties and uses to Geranium, but (as its name implies) has a sweet floral, rose-like aroma, which makes it widely used in perfumes. It is toning and rejuvenating and has a balancing effect as it can soothe without sedating, and uplift the spirits. Try it in the bath, diluted in a carrier for a balancing massage oil, in a facial steam, or in the diffuser as a prelude to a romantic evening.
This is a pure therapeutic-quality certified organic aromatherapy essential oil from South Africa and is obtained from the leaves.
Rose Geranium
The plants originated from South Africa as well as Reunion, Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco and were introduced to European countries such as Italy, Spain and France in the 17th century. There are about 700 different varieties of the plant, yet only 10 supply essential oil in viable quantities, since the normal garden geranium produce far too little oil for extraction.
It is a hairy perennial shrub, often used in hedgerows, and stands up to about one meter high (3 feet) with pointed leaves, serrated at the edges. It has pinkish-white flowers. In early times geraniums were planted around the house to help keep evil spirits at bay. Geranium oil is extracted through steam distillation of stems and leaves of the geranium plant. Rose geranium oil has a sweet and rosy smell with a mint overtone.
Rose Geranium works wonders to support the relieving of stress and anxiety. Due to its soothing effect, this essential oil is also ideal for improving sleep quality.
- Burners and vaporizers - In vapour therapy rose geranium oil can be used to help relieve stress, mild depression, PMS, anxiety and tension, menopausal problems and for general energizing.
- Blended massage oil or in the bath - Rose geranium oil can be used in blended massage oil or diluted in a bath to assist with PMS, depression, stress, anxiety and tension.
- Cream or lotion - As a constituent in a blended cream or lotion, rose geranium essential oil can be used for clearing sluggish and oily skin.
- Shampoo - Rose geranium oil can also be diluted in shampoo to help with head lice.
Although essential oils blend and mix well aroma-wise with one another, Geranium oil does go very well with other oils such as angelica, basil, bergamot, carrot seed, cedarwood, citronella, clary sage, grapefruit, jasmine, lavender, lime, neroli, orange and rosemary.
Important Information
- Essential Oils are highly concentrated extracts of medicinal plants, very powerful in their effect and should be used with moderation and great care.
Essential oils used for massage - general instructions for dilution
- If used other than for ambient diffusion, i.e. for massages, essential oils should always be diluted in a good quality vegetable carrier oil before applying to the skin (i.e. sweet almond, sesame, jojoba, olive oil, etc.).
- The standard dilution for adults is 1–3% essential oil, or about 3–10 drops of essential oil in 15 ml (= 1 tablespoon) of vegetable oil (20 drops = 1ml).
- For children, sensitive skin and during pregnancy the dilution should be 0,5%-1% (1-2 drops in 10 ml).
- For a full bath use for adults 5–15 drops and 3–5 drops for a footbath. The essential oils should be diluted with some carrier oil, a little cream or honey to help them disperse in the water.
Specific oils requiring higher dilution
- Essential oils of Clove bud, Cinnamon (leaf or bark), Oregano, Savory, Thyme (thymol and borneol) can irritate the skin, use only highly diluted (0.5%—1% dilution).
- For sensitive skin care should also be taken with Aniseed, Fennel, Lemongrass, Melissa (Balm), Peppermint, Sage, Wintergreen, and sometimes also Basil, Ginger, Lemon and Bitter Orange (1 - 3 % dilution).
Some precautions
- These oils (except the citrus oils) should also not be used for children under 2 years and during pregnancy.
- If pregnant avoid in addition: Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Juniper, sweet Marjoram, and Myrrh.
- If applying photo-sensitizing essentials oils like Bergamot, Orange, Mandarin or Lemon to your skin (even in dilution) do not expose your skin to direct sun for several hours afterwards (to avoid pigment spots). The furocoumarin free Bergamot is ok.
- In case of high blood pressure Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme (thyme) are contra-indicated; a gentle massage with relaxing essential oils, however, is very beneficial.
- In case of Epilepsy do not use the essential oils of sweet Fennel, Hyssop, Rosemary and Sage.
- If you have a medical condition we recommend that you seek the advice of a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner or aromatherapist.
