Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini)Palmarosa Organic Essential Oil

Anti-infection, Balancing, Toning - Helps Keep a Clear Complexion

The soft, floral scent of palmarosa is reminiscent of geranium. It is distilled from a tropical grass and has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It is useful for colds, flu, sinusitis, and coughs. It is balancing and regenerative for all skin types and is helpful for problematic and damaged skin. It eases morning fatigue and the blues and is ideal for stress and nervous exhaustion.

This is a pure therapeutic-quality certified organic aromatherapy essential oil from Nepal and is obtained from the whole plant.

What Is Palmarosa Oil?

Palmarosa, also known as Indian or Turkish geranium, rosha or motia, is a type of tropical grass native to India and is known for its rich supply of volatile oils. The herbaceous green grass shares similarities with lemongrass and citronella.

The two types of palmarosa from which the essential oil is obtained are sofia and motia, and they vary slightly in their scent, from rose-like to lemony, spicy or citrus-like. The name "palmarosa" was given to the plant because of its fragrance similar to rose oil and in the past, Turks blended the oil with the more expensive rose oil.

Benefits of Palmarosa Oil

Palmarosa oil is well-known for its hydrating properties and can assist in preventing inflammation and quelling dehydration. It also balances the sebum or oil production of your skin, aids in the healing of cuts and bruises, and helps remedy acne breakouts.

How to use Palmarosa Oil

  • Mix a few drops of palmarosa oil to ointments and skin care creams to treat skin infections and help clean wounds to prevent them from being septic.
  • Add 2 to 3 drops of this plant oil to your bath water or use it as a massage oil to prevent pain, spasms, convulsions and skin problems.
  • Massage your skin with 2 drops of palmarosa oil blended with coconut oil. Doing so will moisturize your skin and fight signs of ageing like wrinkles. Oil of palmarosa can also help treat Candida, shingles, rashes, acne and blemishes.
  • Add 2 to 3 drops of this oil to your diffuser, air freshener, vaporizer or even a cloth. Its rosy fragrance will help comfort your mind and body. It may even treat nervousness and anxiety, and instil positivity.

Palmarosa oil blends particularly well with rosemary, ylang-ylang, geranium and lime oils.

The essential oil of palmarosa is considered completely safe. It is a nonirritant, non-sensitizing and nontoxic plant oil. However, as an extra precaution, you are advised to never use it without dilution. We recommend blending palmarosa oil with a milder carrier oil like coconut oil.

Essential OilImportant Information

  • * Essential Oils are highly concentrated extracts of medicinal plants, very powerful in their effect and should be used with moderation and great care.

Essential oils used for massage - general instructions for dilution

  • If used other than for ambient diffusion, i.e. for massages, essential oils should always be diluted in a good quality vegetable carrier oil before applying to the skin (i.e. sweet almond, sesame, jojoba, olive oil, etc.).
  • The standard dilution for adults is 1–3% essential oil, or about 3–10 drops of essential oil in 15 ml (= 1 tablespoon) of vegetable oil (20 drops = 1ml).
  • For children, sensitive skin and during pregnancy the dilution should be 0,5%-1% (1-2 drops in 10 ml).
  • For a full bath use for adults 5–15 drops and 3–5 drops for a footbath. The essential oils should be diluted with some carrier oil, a little cream or honey to help them disperse in the water.

Specific oils requiring higher dilution

  • Essential oils of Clove bud, Cinnamon (leaf or bark), Oregano, Savory, Thyme (thymol and borneol) can irritate the skin, use only highly diluted (0.5%—1% dilution).
  • For sensitive skin care should also be taken with Aniseed, Fennel, Lemongrass, Melissa (Balm), Peppermint, Sage, Wintergreen, and sometimes also Basil, Ginger, Lemon and Bitter Orange (1 - 3 % dilution).

Some precautions

  • These oils (except the citrus oils) should also not be used for children under 2 years and during pregnancy.
  • If pregnant avoid in addition: Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Juniper, Sweet Marjoram, and Myrrh.
  • If applying photo-sensitizing essentials oils like Bergamot, Orange, Mandarin or Lemon to your skin (even in dilution) do not expose your skin to direct sun for several hours afterwards (to avoid pigment spots). The furocoumarin free Bergamot is ok.
  • In case of high blood pressure Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme (thyme) are contra-indicated; a gentle massage with relaxing essential oils, however, is very beneficial.
  • In case of Epilepsy do not use the essential oils of sweet Fennel, Hyssop, Rosemary and Sage.
  • If you have a medical condition we recommend that you seek the advice of a Maharishi Ayurveda practitioner or aromatherapist.
