Marshmallow root

Single spices from Maharishi AyurVedaAdd flavour and balance with spices

Spices are not just great flavour-enhancers, they come with therapeutic properties as well. Sauté your spices in Ghee and add to your dishes, add some to soups, stews and sauces as they're cooking or sprinkle over prepared vegetables or rice at the table. Convenient, and mouth-wateringly delicious!

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

The plant, not the sweet shop treat, has its origins in Africa with its roots being used for centuries in herbal teas. A native root to the UK, with its sweet flavour, was favoured during medieval times for treatment of sore throats. A favourite plant grown in the monasteries of Europe we find ours in the fields of Bulgaria. Marshmallow thriving in wet climates and damp soil has the ability to pass this moisture-retaining gift onto us. Full of soothing mucilage these soft roots are famous for soothing dryness.

Typical Uses

Making tea ( an infusion) from Marshmallow leaves:

  • pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried marsh mallow leaves and flowers and cover
  • strain after 10 minutes
  • drink 2 - 3 cups per day

Making a decoction from the roots

  • let 1 tablespoon of dried marsh mallow root stand in 1 cup of cold water for 1 hr., stirring occasionally.
  • heat to a gentle boil; simmer, covered, for 10 minutes
  • remove from heat
  • drink 2-3 cups a day after meals
  • if you have bronchitis, add a touch of honey

It is one of the ingredients used in Dr Nancy Lonsdorf's teas recommended for menopausal support.

Not recommended for extended use by itself.

Spice Wise

Single spices from Maharishi AyurVeda The exotic colours and heady aromas of spices can elevate an ordinary dish into a sublime feast for the sense of sight, smell and taste. What's more, most spices also come with therapeutic properties, so every meal that includes spices can become an experience in enhancing health and well-being. Ayurveda, the ancient system of healing from India, has been singing the praises of spices as "wonder foods" for thousands of years. Spices are ingredients in many synergistic ayurvedic herbal formulations, and an ayurvedic expert, when giving you advice, is as likely to recommend specific spices to include in your diet as to suggest herbal supplements for you to take.

Ideal to sauté your spice mix - Original Ayurveda Bio Ghee.
