Maharishi's Yoga - The Royal Path to Enlightenment

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental MeditationMaharishi's Yoga - The Royal Path to Enlightenment

By William F. Sands, Ph.D.

About this publication

To many, Yoga is an ancient form of exercise, practiced for its health benefits. But Yoga is more than exercise, and its benefits go far beyond health.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has provided a unique and fresh understanding of the ancient science of Yoga, restoring its deepest significance. His approach is rich in both theory and practice. It provides the key to inner peace, stress and anxiety relief, happiness, wellness, success, and — ultimately — the realization the of the true purpose of Yoga — to elevate life to its highest potential —enlightenment.

This easy-to-read and far-reaching book explores Maharishi’s teaching on Yoga philosophy from several perspectives, including its profound practical benefits for individuals and societies, while also considering traditional areas of Yoga philosophy, such as siddhi performance, Karma Yoga, Gyan Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and the fulfillment of the four traditional goals of human life: dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.

Those familiar with Maharishi’s teachings will be delighted at the depth and scope of Maharishi’s lectures on Yoga that Dr. Sands has distilled into this manual for perfection in life. Anyone familiar with Yoga will enjoy the systematic, logical examination of Maharishi’s Yoga and its powerful conclusion: that the goals of Yoga — from inner peace to full enlightenment — can be effortlessly achieved.

“William Sands’ new book on Yoga is a wonderful and clear presentation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s revival of Yoga philosophy. Maharishi brought Yoga out of the world of mysticism and speculative philosophy, and created a scientifically verified program for unfolding the total potential of human life, life in enlightenment. Maharishi’s brilliant insights make Dr. Sands’ book a must-read for anyone interested in Yoga.” —Robert Keith Wallace, Ph.D., author of The Physiology of Consciousness and The Neurophysiology of Enlightenment.

Great insight into real meaning of yogaGreat insight into real meaning of yoga, clearly written and a great read

It's a slim volume, but a big book. In it, William Sands explores the full meaning of yoga, as explained by the body of knowledge it springs from, the Vedic tradition of India. It's a weighty topic, but Sands' clear and personable writing style makes the book a delight to read.

Referring to the teachings of the Vedic scholar, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Sands explains that yoga is essentially a state of unity between our conscious mind, and our silent, unbounded inner nature. And he explains that the attainment of this state has become much easier in the past few decades owing to major advances in the understanding of meditation.

Yogis have always been keenly interested in exploring inner space, though meditation, as a means to gain the state of yoga. In fact, mental yoga practices have been the main priority among the yogis of India, the yoga asanas or postures being mainly valued as method to learn to sit for long periods in meditation. The ancient Vedic texts were composed by great sages who had stabilized the experience of yoga through meditation. But the understanding of natural meditation, which takes the mind inward to crystal-clear unboundedness in an effortless and efficient manner, has been largely absent in this modern age.

Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Sands explains in detail how the practice of yoga meditation in its pure and original form creates a state in which the body rests deeply, but the brain is awake, enlivened. Citing the ancient Vedic texts, he also explains how this state of restful alertness in time becomes a continuous experience outside of meditation. Sands delights us with a clear and concrete account of the increasingly joyful states of enlightenment that unfold from there.

The book also casts considerable light on the real meaning and intent of classic icons of the yoga world, including the system of Ashtanga Yoga, the Yoga Sutras, Karma Yoga, and other the main types of Yoga practice. It's a great read, full of refreshing insights.
