Transcript of video by Dr Donn Brennan: The earliest signs of ageing are described quite beautifully in Sharngadhara, one of the old texts of Ayurveda. I'll read you the quote. Blissful sleep for better health with Ayurveda (video + transcript)

By |2019-02-05T15:01:12+00:00February 16th, 2018|Anxiety, Brain, Consciousness, Detox, Digestion, Dr Donn Brennan videos, Drinks, Emotions, Fatigue, Food, Heart, Kapha, Meditation, Mind, Obesity, Pitta, Sleep, Stress, Vata, Weightloss|

In truth, we need more sleep than we think we need. All the research is pointing to a minimum of eight hours sleep that people actually need for the work that the brain needs to do overnight to be accomplished. Less sleep leaves us less capable, even if we don’t know it. Even an hour’s lack of sleep [each night] over a 10-day period leaves us as incompetent and incapable cognitively, as if we had missed a whole night’s sleep for one night. The only difference is we don’t recognise it. We don’t know it.

How does a doctor ensure their patient does what is best for their health, whether it’s taking medication regularly, quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol, changing diet or getting more exercise? Good or bad health choices can mean the difference between good and bad outcomes, yet you can’t force a person to do the right thing. Breaking unhealthy lifestyle or eating habits has to be an [...]

Temperatures are down, wind is up, trees have changed colour and leaves are being shed and are blowing everywhere. Autumn has its own distinctive weather, colours and qualities. The air element and the vital force called Prana have become abundant in the atmosphere and the dry, rough, windy, erratic, cool, subtle, and clear Gunas or qualities now predominate. As these Gunas are shared by Vata Dosha (the principle of movement), autumn is considered [...]

I first learned about internal cleansing when, as a teenager, I developed an interest in self-development. I picked up a book called Hatha Yoga, in which the author described how in North India, people noticed the strange cleansing habits of a certain species of migrating bird. After travelling thousands of miles, the exhausted and bedraggled birds would land near lakes and rivers and, after taking in water, would insert [...]

I’ve recently been helping an Australian friend in her quest to find a decent café latte up here in the North West of England and it’s not been easy. While Sydney seems to be chock full of expert Baristas who can serve up the perfect café lattes at the drop of a hat, many of our British versions don’t seem to quite hit the mark.My friend’s obsession with [...]

The concept of the three Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha – is most people’s route into understanding Ayurveda. It’s easy to grasp how Vata Dosha can be responsible for all movement, Pitta for all transformations and Kapha for all structure in our body and the world around us. But there is a deeper level of this understanding though and the three Doshas have their root or master [...]

Because of its unique ability to penetrate into cells and cross the brain-blood barrier, Ayurveda considers ghee to be a highly effective medium for transporting the healing nature of herbs very deep into our body tissues. For thousands of years Ayurveda has created numerous Ghritas or herbalised ghees – herbs infused into ghee in order to enhanced their therapeutic effects. How are Ghritas produced? Ayurvedic practitioner, Dr Donn Brennan [...]

Handle the transition from Spring to Summer with Ayurveda

By |2017-09-05T13:51:42+01:00May 14th, 2017|Detox, Digestion, Natural cycles, Panchakarma, Rasayanas, Sleep, Spring, Summer|

From the Ayurvedic viewpoint, interesting things happen within your body as winter gives way to spring and then spring give way to summer. As spring progresses, the cold, slow, heavy and sticky qualities of Kapha Dosha, that build up during late winter, gradually melt away and this often results in the chest colds and runny noses common in March, April and May. Springtime supports the body’s natural elimination [...]

Can hunger increase your brain power?

By |2017-09-05T13:51:42+01:00May 8th, 2017|Detox, Fasting, Mind, Panchakarma, Rejuvenation|

When was the last time you felt hunger so deep that you could eat the proverbial horse? Well, research suggests that the regular experience of hunger may boost the power of your brain. It seems that hunger produces a stomach hormone called ghrelin that not only stimulates appetite but also seems to promote the growth of new brain cells; it even protects those cells from the effects of [...]

How old is Ayurveda and what are its origins?

By |2017-09-05T13:51:42+01:00April 15th, 2017|Consciousness, Knowledge, Maharishi Ayurveda Blogs, Natural cycles, Yugas|

You often find assertions such as “Ayurveda is a 3,000-year-old medical science”. Are such origin dates just plucked from the air because writers know their audience needs some reference point to what may appear, a mysterious and obscure health system? What are the real origins of Ayurveda? As old as mankind I recently went to a fascinating talk by Dr Jagdish Vaidya here in Skelmersdale, where he stated [...]

Take care what you drink, breathe and eat

By |2017-09-05T13:51:42+01:00March 22nd, 2017|Detox, Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre, Oils, Panchakarma|

We are told to drink plenty of water each day as it’s good for our brains and for the rest of the body. We are told to drink filtered or bottled water as the chlorine added to mains water to kill bacteria is bad for us. Now we are told that the plastic used in water filters and bottled water contains endocrine disruptive chemicals (ECDs) that damage our hormone [...]

Ayurveda for Childbirth and Nursing Mothers

By |2017-09-05T13:51:42+01:00March 12th, 2017|Mother and Baby, Women's Health|

Childbirth is a natural part of life, and as with all things natural the less medical intervention the better. Yet, this natural process, which women have been doing for many thousands of years, has become highly medicalised. There are good reasons for the medicalisation of the birthing process. Before the proper understanding of how infectious diseases spread, and of the importance of strict hygiene procedures, childbirth was potentially a [...]
