Vitamins and
Minerals in Maharishi Ayurveda
The whole
or the parts?
Because there are innumerable parts
to life and because the whole is more than the sum of
the parts, if it is possible, the best strategy seems to
be to deal primarily with the whole and secondarily with
the parts.
Ayurveda is pre-eminent within
natural medicine in dealing with the whole. It clearly
defines perfect health, the most holistic value of life,
and provides various means for moving life towards that
goal. Even when dealing with discomfort or disease it
does so by increasing health rather than removing
disease.
The Constituents of foods
In the west we tend to evaluate foods
in terms of the energy and chemical building blocks they
provide. This reflects the general allopathic approach
of dealing with the parts in order to improve the whole.
However knowledge of the vitamin
and mineral (V&M) content of food and food supplements
is often not very useful because the general health,
dietary status and lifestyles of the user as well as the
chemical form of the vitamins and minerals all have
important effects on what food constituents we need and
how they are metabolised. For instance there is growing
evidence that natural forms of vitamins and minerals are
safer than artificial (see
Alliance Natural Health (PDF File)
Para 2.1).
Inner intelligence?
Ayurveda
does not concern itself much with the constituents of
foodstuffs but rather considers the various
chacteristics of the foods as a whole in terms that
indicate by whom and how they can be usefully used. In
the words of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of
Maharishi Ayurveda, the most important quality of food
is its ability to enliven the inner intelligence of mind
and body.
This inner intelligence is the
self-balancing tendency of life. There does not seem to
be any term in biomedicine for this inner intelligence
but it is recognised in the old saying ‘the doctor
treats but nature heals’.
Ayurveda is part of Vedic Science,
which is the systematic science of consciousness, and
understands that consciousness, in its most settled
state, is the inner intelligence that governs mind and
body. The state of perfect health described by Ayurveda
is that in which the mind and body are in perfect
balance and the most settled state of awareness is a
permanent experience. (see
Awakening Natures Healing
Intelligence
by Hari Sharma MD).
How can the value of foods be
measured?
It seems logical that the ability of
foods and supplements to enliven the inner intelligence
can best be measured by those in whom that inner
intelligence is best developed. Ultimately only
wholeness can measure wholeness.
Maharishi Ayurveda Products are
manufactured in a factory where all the staff daily
practice Transcendental Meditation to develop their own
inner intelligence and so that the products are made in
a calm, friendly environment.
Create Ojas
Maharishi
Amrit Kalash
(MAK) is the product most
specifically designed to enliven the body’s inner
intelligence at its most fundamental level. MAK creates
ojas,
the most refined product of the digestive process,
created only when digestion is perfect and which
supports the highest quality of human awareness and
perfect health.
Maharishi has spoken warmly of the
value of Maharishi Amrit Kalash and has given it his
seal of approval – that is the approval of what seems to
be the most highly developed inner intelligence that has
been on this earth in many centuries.
