Anxiety
and poor sleep often occur together, and both tend to increase in the
Vata season (late autumn and winter).
So if you
are tossing and turning trying to get to sleep, and suffering from worrying
thoughts, try some of these Maharishi Ayurveda guidelines:
-
1.
Eat Vata balancing foods
- Reduce
light, dry foods in your diet and favour warm, cooked, more substantial
foods, with the main meal at lunchtime.
-
-
2.
Eat your evening meal early
- Allow
three hours of digestion before bedtime. Ideally take a light meal before
6-7 pm.
-
-
3.
Avoid chocolate, caffeine and alcohol at night
- These
can affect sleep, as can cheese and heavy foods that take a long time to
digest.
-
-
4.
Turn off the TV and computer after 8.30
- This
allows the mind to start to take rest.
-
-
5.
Listen to soothing
Gandharva Veda music
- Choose
Gandharva Veda melodies suitable for the evening time of day (6 pm – 10 pm),
or read an uplifting book.
-
-
6.
Take a short evening stroll
- And
breathe deeply to really fill and empty the lungs.
-
-
7.
Use
Peace at Night Therapeutic Aroma
-
to
help create a calming environment for sleep.
-
-
8. Go
to bed early, well before 10.00pm
- If you
go to bed during the Kapha time (6 pm – 10 pm) you may find it easier to
fall asleep.
|
-
9.
Train yourself to wake up early, before 6.00 am
- then
you’ll feel fresh and active during the day and you’ll gradually fall asleep
earlier at night.
-
-
10.
Give yourself an
abhyanga (oil massage) each morning,
- followed by a warm bath to relieve tensions in the mind and body.
-
-
11.
Give yourself a mini-massage,
-
just the head and feet, before bed.
Then
take a hot bath and you’ll be ready to drift into sleep.
-
-
12.
Exercise every day to reduce stress, but not at night;
- Exercise between 6.00 am and 10.00 am is best. Exercise at night can be too
stimulating before bed.
-
-
13.
Take Blissful Sleep herbal formulas to settle your mind for sleep:
- Take
Blissful Sleep Basic (MA1778) and also
Blissful Sleep Vata (MA1683) to help you settle at bedtime,
Blissful Sleep Pitta (MA1684) to help uninterrupted sleep, and
Blissful Sleep Kapha (MA1682) to help you feel refreshed in the
morning.
-
-
14.
Lower stress levels with Peace of Mind herbal formula
- Researchers have found that levels of the hormone cortisol climb when people
are under stress. Researchers also found that subjects who took
Peace of Mind
(1401) for three months significantly
lowered their salivary cortisol levels.
-
-
15.
Practise
Transcendental Meditation,
- the most effective and best-researched
technique for reducing stress.
