Snoring
is often not a problem to the snorer but can be a significant nuisance to
their partner. Snoring is caused by increase in the volume of the soft
tissues of mouth and throat. It is often associated with nasal congestion,
allergies, high blood pressure and nasal polyps and can contribute to
reduced sleep quality and quantity, heart disease and headaches.
The Ayurvedic
perspective is that keeping Kapha dosha in balance can help you stay free of
the inconveniences of snoring.
Lifestyle advice
Minimise smoking.
Even second hand smoking can promote snoring.
Sleep on your side
rather than your back.
Go to bed early and
get up early.
Take vigorous
exercise several times per week and keep your weight normal (see
Sports Fitness - Exercise the Ayurvedic Way).
Panchakarma can be helpful as part of
an ama reducing and weight-balance programme.
Dietary advice
Eat
lightly in the evenings, preferably at least 3 hours before bedtime.
Adopt a Kapha
pacifying diet favouring the pungent, bitter and astringent tastes over
the sweet, sour and salty tastes and light, warm, dry foods over heavy,
cold and moist foods.
Especially reduce
diary foods such as cheese, cream, butter and oily foods.
Use cumin, turmeric,
cinnamon, ginger and black pepper feely - they help reduce Kapha.
Sip hot water
frequently throughout the day.

guidelines see
Dietary Guidelines.
Herbal Support
Nasal
Drops (MA735) help enliven
the upper respiratory tract and keep you free from snoring. Sniff them
up your nose 3 times a day.
Kapha Tea and
Breathe Easy tablets (MA1405)
are very good at keeping the nose and throat free from excess mucus and
moisture.
Inhalation Oil
or
Breathe Easy Aroma diffused in
the bedroom at bedtime will help, as will spicing up your meals with
Digestive Spice Mix or
Kapha churna.
If the respiratory
tract becomes affected by allergens the tissues may become inflamed and
snoring is more likely. Therefore follow the Maharishi Ayurveda
programme for maintaining natural resistance to allergens (Preventing
Allergies). The core of this natural allergy resistance programme is
supporting digestion, staying ama free and maintain resistance with
Allergard (MA1788).
Start
early
It is recommended
that you start your natural allergy resistance programme 2 months before
the allergy season starts.
