1. Quote of the month

Inaugurating fifty eight Maharishi Hospitals and Maharishi Vedic Health Colleges around the world, Dr Walter Molk, Director of Curriculum Development, described their goal as being to provide relief and restoration of perfect health to patients.

We will enliven the inner healing power of the body and strengthen the physiology, allowing each person to gain mastery of their own physiology. We will also offer programmes for the reversal of ageing to provide creativity and energy for the mind and body. The slogan for these programmes is: "As the age advances, the age prolongs". Our hospitals will fulfil the need for comprehensive and complete health care, for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and for the promotion of health and longevity.

2. Dr Donn Brennan’s Seasonal Tips for November

November is the height of Vata season and it’s a most beautiful time in nature when the colours are most enjoyable. It’s as if nature is beckoning us out to enjoy its finery. Read More

3. Ghee – considered one of the three great medicines in Ayurveda

Ghee’s main use is for balancing Pitta, the aspect of the body’s intelligence that governs metabolism. Being an oil, ghee is also Vata-reducing, so it has a settling effect on the mind and body. It also has a penetrating quality – think of it as an ‘easing oil’ - and is used for detoxifying as part of the panchakarma treatment process, where people are asked to take a specific amount on successive days to loosen and remove toxins from the circulatory channels and tissues of the body. It is also use to benefit the eyes in a treatment called Netra Tarpana, which is given at Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centres.

If you are having trouble sleeping, you can rub ghee on the soles of the feet before bedtime, making sure to rub off the excess when you go to bed. Ghee is used in Ayurvedic medicine, as the herbs are processed in ghee. Properly made, ghee can last a very long time, and there is a tradition amongst Ayurveda vaidyas (practitioners) of ‘laying down’ ghee for future generations. It is said in Ayurveda that ghee improves with age, and that 100 year ghee is the most efficacious.

Ghee made properly from organic unsalted cow’s milk butter is an excellent food, a sattvic food, a food that won’t disturb the mind, but it needs to be used in moderation according to the strength of one’s digestion. In cooking it is ideal when you are cooking at higher temperatures because it doesn’t burn a readily as olive oil.

Maharishi Ayurveda Products’ Bioland ghee is made strictly according to Ayurvedic guidelines. The butter comes from the Allgau, the traditional dairy region of Germany. The butter is not homogenised and the ghee produced from it therefore has a natural crystalline, grainy structure that is easier to digest. No industrial procedures – centrifuges, vacuums or adding gases – that allow ghee to be made quickly and cheaply, are used.

Also local and international sales agents interested in Ayurveda.

Over the last 20 years, Maharishi Ayurveda Products has been a predominantly mail order company, but gradually our products are being sold in shops, salons, spas and clinics and hotels around the country, and we supply distributors and agents in many other countries.

We are very happy to welcome more retailers to Maharishi Ayurveda. The products are the best in their class, the name Maharishi Ayurveda now has a worldwide reputation for excellence and authenticity, and there is a growing demand for both the health products and the beauty range.

We also supply Yoga teachers and complementary health and beauty therapists, and more of these outlets are also welcome because the teachers and therapists use the products themselves, become knowledgeable about them and know which to recommend to their clients.

10. Q&A - What are Vata Pitta and Kapha doshas?

Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) are the (three) fundamental operating principles in our physiology. Vata is responsible for all movement in the body — circulation of blood, movement of food down the digestive tract, mental activity, etc. Pitta governs transformation and metabolism such as digestion of food and its transformation into bodily tissues, “digestion” of ideas and experiences, and more. Kapha gives solidity to the tissues, holds together different parts of the body and balances the bodily fluids.

Traditional Vedic texts associate each dosha with specific qualities. Vata is associated with cold, lightness, dryness and movement; Pitta with heat, light, sharpness and acidity; Kapha with cold, heaviness, oiliness and slowness.

Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are found everywhere in nature—wherever their qualities are present. Different foods, geographic locations, seasons, times of the day, etc. each have a predominant dosha associated with them. When a certain dosha increases in the environment it will tend to increase the same dosha in our physiology, and vice versa.
