1.  Ayurveda health advice from Dr Donn Brennan for May

“May is joyful time of transition – a change of season. Kapha season comes to and end and Pitta season, the one most people love, starts. The reason we love the summer is that it tends to balance our Kapha and our Vata, which our changeable, damp, cold weather overall tends to put out of balance. However, Ayurveda cautions that we should be discreet and careful at the change of season. Over a two-week period we should let go of strategies for balancing Kapha and adapt and adjust to those strategies, which reduce Pitta for the oncoming season. Two things to specifically to keep in mind for the summer”

2.  Ayurvedic routines for better sleep

Sleep and your Ayurveda constitution

According to Ayurveda, the amount of sleep you need depends on your mind-body type.

See Mind/Body Questionnaire

A Kapha-type constitution needs most sleep, about eight or nine hours, in order to feel rested.

Pitta-predominant types need seven to eight hours.

Vata-types can manage with six to seven hours.

Sleep requirements and stage of life

Babies can sleep 15 or 16 hours out of every 24, children frequently sleep 10 hours or more and elderly people rarely enjoy a sound, unbroken sleep of more than four or five hours.

Quality of sleep, bed time and daily routine

Sleep is part of the body’s natural 24-hour cycle, and Ayurveda advises that the best time to retire for sleep is before 10 pm (or even by 9 pm, if you can manage it).

A sign of good sleep is that you feel refreshed when you wake in the morning. With a good daily routine you shouldn’t need an alarm clock to wake you.

3.  Maharishi Sthapatya Veda, health-promoting building design

The full potential of the home

A home can be so much more than is generally experienced today — it can be a special space that creates an influence of good health, happiness, family harmony and enlightenment.

People who live and work in Maharishi Sthapatya Veda buildings (buildings designed according to the ancient principles of Vedic architecture) report that they think more clearly, make better decisions, feel happier and healthier, feel more alert and refreshed throughout the day, enjoy more restful and refreshing sleep, have more energy and less fatigue and experience less stress and greater peace of mind.

It’s the complete opposite of ‘sick building syndrome’ that we often read about.
Maharishi Sthapatya Veda architecture reliably gives our homes these beneficial influences by using laws of nature that connect individual intelligence with cosmic intelligence. You can have these nourishing and health-promoting influences in your home, your work place, your school or your entire community.

A modern design science of ancient origin

Maharishi Vedic architecture, sometimes referred to as Vastu Vidya or Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design comes from the ancient Vedic tradition of India.

The Sanskrit word Sthapan means to establish. The Sanskrit word Veda means knowledge of Natural Law.

The system of Vedic architecture derives its principles from the ancient texts of Sthapatya Veda, the eternal system of architecture and city planning that has been recently restored to its completeness by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

4.  Ayurveda and children’s health

You're all crammed into the car for the family holiday. You’ve been on the road a while. Now your children are reacting to the long drive.

Red-haired Amanda keeps saying, "I'm hot!" and "I'm hungry. When do we eat?"  She is trying to get the others to play car games, which she usually wins.

Thin, wiry Jenny is talking a mile-a-minute, wound up from the travel and anxious to get there.

Simon, who is prone to gaining weight, congenially listens to his sisters and then drifts off to sleep.

As every parent knows, no two children are alike. Just as one child may have blond hair and another dark, psychological and physical needs can also vary widely from child to child.

Once you understand your child's mind-body type - his or her basic make-up - you know how best to help.

The health and creativity of the child is based on how much good feeling, how much emotional, physiological, and psychological nourishment he or she receives from the parents.

Ayurveda is a rich source of advice for your children’s health.

6.  Self-care Ayurveda massage – how, when, why, and what oils to use

How can a ritual so luxuriously relaxing and blissfully comforting as a full-body warm oil massage revitalise your body and mind, getting them ready every day for peak performance?

There is an explanation for this seeming contradiction. Accumulated stress and toxins in the mind and body dissolve during the daily Ayurveda massage. A daily full-body warm oil massage thereby acts as a powerful recharger and rejuvenator.

"Abhyanga" - the full body oil massage - is an important part of the daily routine recommended by Ayurveda for overall health and well-being.

Traditional Ayurvedic texts are eloquent about the abhyanga’s benefits:

"Give yourself a full body oil massage on a daily basis. It is nourishing, pacifies the doshas, relieves fatigue, provides stamina, pleasure and perfect sleep, enhances the complexion and the lustre of the skin, promotes longevity and nourishes all parts of the body".

Some of the benefits traditionally associated with regular performance of this pleasant daily ritual are:
