Personalised Ayurvedic Oil Massage (Panchakarma)
MAHARISHI AYURVEDIC MASSAGE
Also known as Abhyanga, which means loving hands,
ayurvedic massage is used as an integral and enjoyable part of the
Panchakarma treatment programme (usually spread over 3 to 7 days)
and as a one day treatment at the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre
in Skelmersdale. It is usually performed by two therapists who work in
harmony using specially selected herbalised oils. The oil most commonly
used is sesame oil, which penetrates the skin easily and helps
remove toxins from the body. In Ayurveda, toxins are called ama, and are
caused by improperly digested food and internal contamination from
external pollutants.
Some of the herbalised oil is absorbed through the
skin and reaches deep into the body tissues, where it helps to loosen
impurities and toxins which are then later released from the body
naturally.
There are several different kinds of Abhyanga
depending on which of the doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha are out of
balance. Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three basic metabolic principles
governing all the functions of mind and body, responsible for movement,
metabolism and structure respectively.
Vata balancing massage
If Vata dosha is out of balance, it may mean that you
are not sleeping well, feel anxious or have low body weight. This
massage is slow and soothing. It leaves you feeling deeply relaxed.
Pitta balancing massage
If Pitta is out of balance you can feel heated,
short-tempered and impatient. Often, a special Pitta balancing oil is
used to penetrate the skin and reduce excess Pitta.
Kapha balancing massage
This is a fast and firm massage. Excess Kapha can
leave you feeling sleepy, lazy and depressed, so the speed and pressure
of this massage counteracts these qualities.
Vishesh
is a deep muscle massage for athletic types and those who perform a lot
of physical work. It uses less oil, involves more pressure and helps
release toxins deep in the muscles.
Urdvatana
is often prescribed for those who are overweight. It is designed to
stimulate blood circulation which can lead to long term weight loss.
Pizzichili
is a prolonged massage with warm flowing oil. It produces a very deep
relaxation and refines the whole physiology removing imbalances from a
basic level.
Whichever massage is prescribed for you, it is a
deeply relaxing and enjoyable experience. Any aches and pains in the
muscles quickly disappear and because the mind and body are so closely
connected, a feeling of deep contentment and mental ease can be
experienced following the massage.
