Q. I wonder if you know of, or can recommend, a product called Oxy-Powder colon cleanse, which I discovered on the internet. Also, do you think colon cleansing is helpful for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with chronic constipation?

S Johnson, Cheltenham

A. A common consequence of the typical high-protein western diet that most of us eat is an overproduction of mucus. This builds up in the intestinal tract over the years until it becomes more like a thick, sticky tar. It can cause digestive problems, especially constipation, by slowing down peristalsis - the wavelike eliminating action of the gut - and narrowing the passage through which waste must pass. It is this mucus that colonic irrigation removes.

For those who feel too faint-hearted for this procedure, the good news is that herbs can do the same thing. While I am not familiar with the product you mention, there are many excellent colon-cleansing formulations that can help manage IBS symptoms and prevent chronic constipation.

One of the simplest yet most effective of these is Triphala, an Ayurvedic herbal remedy. Triphala formulations usually combine Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki, Indian plants that work to restore healthy peristalsis. Maharishi Ayurveda Triphala - 60 x 1,000mg capsules. Take as directed on the box or, if the problem is chronic, take two tablets at bedtime with warm water, then three tablets the next night and four the night after. After two or three days at this maximum dosage, you can cut back slowly, returning to a maintenance dose.
